Three Laundry Routines To Make Wash Day Easier

Laundry day. Either you have it down pat or you are still struggling to find what works best for you. Doing laundry isn’t the most fun or glamorous task in life, but it must be done and if done consistently, it can add to feeling more ease at home and in life.

In this week’s episode on the Routine and Things Podcast, I’m sharing three laundry routines that may help you consistently stay on top of your laundry and make wash day a bit easier.

Word For Word

[Intro] Routines, my absolute favorite word, but you either love them or you hate them. And either way, I strongly believe that routines can be a springboard for improving your home, yourself and your life. I'm Ashley Brown. And this is the Routine and Things Podcast. In each episode we'll dive into a specific routine or point of view that will move you closer to enjoying life more and more each day. Trust me, you're going to want to keep listening, because you're well on your way to getting and staying happy!

Ashley Brown  00:47

Hey, girl! Welcome back to another episode of the Routine and Things Podcast. Thank you so much for joining me today. Alrighty, so in this episode, we're diving into the laundry routine and I really want to give you and share with you three laundry routines that can make wash day a bit easier for you, especially if you struggle with this or you have struggled with this. And you just want to know some ways that you can do laundry that might fit you a bit more and might fit you better for your lifestyle and everything. So I'm sharing with you three laundry routines today. And most of these laundry routines I have tried or I have heard about and so I want to share what I know because they might be really, really helpful for you and for your life. And so I don't want you to feel alone and like the laundry routine type struggle because trust me, I've struggled so much in the past when making wash day easier, and I've tried a bunch of laundry routines and it can feel daunting when you try so many things and nothing works, right. So one day I sat down and really thought about how I wanted to do laundry and I came up with my very own laundry routine that's been working for me and it's been working really well. And it's one of the three that I'm going to share with you today.

Ashley Brown  02:05

And like I said, you're not alone. If laundry frustrates you, it's something that we have to constantly do. And it's just a part of life. So I want it to be a bit easier for you and for you to just flow with your laundry routine. So hopefully I can help today. So let's go ahead and get into the three laundry routines and cut right to the chase. So the first laundry routine I want to share with you is what I call one load a day. So this laundry routine is where you wash and dry one load of laundry each day or most days of the week. And so you just throw the clothes in the washer, you dry them and you fold them and you put them away all on the same day.

Ashley Brown  02:51

And the benefits of this laundry routine is really you don't have to wash a bunch of clothes at one time. So if you're one to not really like to wash a bunch of clothes at one time, this could be perfect for you. Also, you don't have to see clothes piling up or baskets of clothes sitting around. So if there's something that annoys you, this could be perfect for you as well. Another benefit is you won't have to spend the weekend time washing clothes so you won't have to spend your entire weekend washing. I know for many of us that work outside of the home, the weekend time is a prime opportunity for us to clean the home, wash the clothes, but maybe if you have some time that you can throw a load in the washer before you go off to work, this could work for you as well so that you have your weekend time you can spend it how you really want to spend it. So that's another benefit of this laundry routine. And also you can be done with the entire process in that day instead of having something that you have to remember to do the next day. So the folding and putting away of clothes you don't have to remember to do that. You can get the entire process done. So if you're one to really like to get it done and just have it all done, this might actually work for you as well.

Ashley Brown  04:09

I do want you to remember some things though with this laundry routine because I want to make sure that you're thinking of if it really is going to be beneficial for you and if it's something that you really want to try out. So some things to remember is that you will need to have a window of time in your days to wait for the clothes to wash and be able to pop them in the dryer or hang dry the clothes. But you want just make sure you have that window of time to put the clothes in the washer. So like I said if you work outside of the home most days, and let's say that you don't wake up early enough to put the clothes in the washer and you don't have enough time because you have to be out the door in 20 minutes, then maybe this might not be the best routine for you because you don't have that window of time. Also remember that folding and putting away the clothes are all within the same day. So make sure you have the time each day for this as well because if not, you're just going to see baskets of clothes that are washed, just sitting around. And if that frustrates you, then this won't really work for your lifestyle. And also be sure that you can keep up with this because if not, it will pile up quickly. And that's really for each of the routines I'm sharing with you. If you don't keep up with any routine in general, the clothes are gonna pile up. So you want to just kind of think about does this fit your lifestyle, but if you have the window of time, if you want to get everything done and not have to see clothes sitting around, this could be a really good routine for you. So is the one load a day. Wash, dry, fold, put away your clothes on one day. So that's the first routine.

Ashley Brown  05:45

The second routine I want to share with you is, I actually heard about this routine from a mom on Instagram. And she was doing this routine. I was like oh, that routine is pretty interesting. So I want to share it with you. I've never actually done it myself. I don't know how well it works. But I've heard from her and I've also heard other moms talk about this routine as well. And for some people it's a really good routine for them and their lifestyle. So the routine is what I'm calling the basket routine. And so this routine is when you wash all of your clothes, and you place the sorted clothes in baskets to pull out whenever you need them. So no folding and no putting away of your clothes. When you wash your clothes, you're going to have baskets where you're going to sort the washed and dried clothes. You're going to just sort them in batches so that you can pull them out easily throughout your week and there's no folding no putting away of the clothes.

Ashley Brown  06:45

The benefits to this routine because you might be thinking, I have a bunch of baskets sitting around. Yes, but the benefits to this routine is that you don't have to fold or put away clothes and I know for some of us, that is such a very tedious task. And that's why we cannot sometimes keep up with our laundry routine or when things start to really pile up is because we don't make it to the point of putting away the daggone clothes. So, this might actually work for you, if you really can't get to folding or putting away your clothes, you just do the basket routine. Also, another benefit is you have less time spent because you don't have to follow it up with putting away clothes, so in that time that you would be folding and putting away clothes, you can use that time for whatever you want, you know, so that's another benefit of this. So I've seen this be used for children specifically and for children's clothes. Because you know, it's really hard sometimes to keep their clothes really neat and tidy in their drawers, especially when you want them to go pick out their own clothes, especially when they get to that age and then it just looks a hot mess. So this could be really great if you want them to choose their own clothes and you're getting tired of trying to straighten up their clothes all the time. This could be really useful for them and for your children.

Ashley Brown  08:06

So it doesn't mean it has to be used for you. Maybe you just use it for your children's clothes. Also another benefit is you are better able to keep up with laundry because you can visually see the clothes in the basket like dwindling down and you kind of know it's time to wash the clothes again. Those are the benefits of this routine. But like I said, I want you to remember some things so that you know if this routine will be beneficial for you and for your lifestyle, for your family. So the first thing to remember is that you will be seeing the clothes in plain sight each and every day. So if you get annoyed by seeing things around and you like for things to be stored and put away out of sight, this isn't gonna work for you. Okay, unless you put them out of sight somewhere like in a closet then doesn't bother you much. But you will be seeing the clothes in plain sight. And also, remember that having baskets out takes away space within your rooms or within your closets, so if you have limited storage space, or you have smaller rooms that you don't want a bunch of things within, then maybe this isn't gonna work for you as well. So I want you to remember that.

Ashley Brown  09:15

And then the last thing to remember is that you will more than likely have to iron more frequently with the clothes being in the basket for longer amounts of time because they're just going to be very wrinkled just siting in the basket. So while sometimes we can get away with not ironing clothes because they're folded or they're hung up, you probably will have to iron your clothes more often and more frequently. So just some things to keep in mind if you want to try this routine, but it could really be great for your lifestyle, especially for your children if you feel like you are just constantly folding and you want to just add back in some time. Do it with your children's clothes or do it with your own clothes and see how it works.

Ashley Brown  09:58

Now let's move to the last and final routine which is the three day laundry routine and this is my personal routine that I came up with which I absolutely love. And it is to wash and dry all of your clothes on day one. Then on day two, you fold all of your clothes. And on day three, you put away all of your clothes. So that is the three day laundry routine. And the benefits of this routine personally I've seen in my life. And it is you do not have to do everything all in one day, which lessens pressure and stress. So I love to just wash all of my clothes and dry my clothes in one day because I know it's done with, finito, I'm done. So that's my personality, and so I love it because of that. And then also I love this because it's basically compartmentalizing your work, which helps your brain to not become overwhelmed from jumping from one task to another which also helps take less time when you're doing the task. So compartmentalizing tasks, you probably have heard this before, it's super beneficial for the brain. So it's the same here, like you're washing all of your clothes on one day, you're folding all of your clothes on one day, and then you're putting away all of your clothes on one day. So it can really be great for like just easing your brain and allowing your brain to focus on one thing in one specific day, which can be really, really helpful in just decluttering your mind and putting you more at ease.

Ashley Brown  11:32

And then another benefit is you don't have to think about doing laundry for at least four entire days. So that's what I love about this routine, too. I love that. I get a four day break from washing clothes. And I'm like, Yes, like I don't have to do laundry for four days. So that's another huge benefit of this and like I said, I've seen this routine work out really great for my lifestyle, and I've been able to keep up with laundry because of it.

Ashley Brown  12:04

Now things to remember about this routine to see if it's going to fit for you and if you're going to be able to truly keep up with this is that one, your clothes will pile up throughout the week. So if you don't like your clothes piling up, then this might not be the routine for you. Also, you will be washing and drying all of your clothes in one day. So if you don't have the time to do this, it may not work for you too. You definitely could do this on a weekend day wash all the clothes on a weekend day. But if you feel like you just don't have the time to wash all of your family's clothes, especially like if you have a large family, you might be like "Ashley". So if you have a large family, this might not work for you unless you have, unless you guys have really minimal clothing which I'm a huge advocate for especially when we're talking about kids, even for myself. I'm a huge advocate for not having a lot of clothes, and just minimizing that, but if you have a bunch of clothes that you wash for your family, this might not work for you because you might not be able to get all the clothes washed on one day.

Ashley Brown  13:09

And then another thing that I want you to remember is that you will be dealing with a fair amount of clothing all at one time. So if folding really annoys you, if putting away clothes really annoys you, it may overwhelm you if you have to fold a bunch of clothes at one time. So another thing I want you to remember is that you will be dealing with a fair amount of clothing all at one time. So you're going to be folding a bunch of clothes and you're going to be putting away a bunch of clothes. So if this overwhelms you, this may not be the routine for you. I know that we have a minimal amount of clothing for my family so I might have like a large basket and like a smaller basket to fold and put away so it doesn't overwhelm me. Like I said, if you have a bunch of clothes or your family is pretty large. If you don't mind folding and putting away clothes as it is, this might overwhelm you. And it might annoy you to be perfectly honest if you're doing this. So I just want to throw those things out there to you.

Ashley Brown  14:11

But this routine could be beneficial for your lifestyle if you have time to wash on your clothes on one day, and if you're okay with putting on the podcast or a show and folding clothes and then putting them away the next day. So this three day laundry routine could be the perfect routine for you.

Ashley Brown  14:30

Those are the routines. That's it. So I want to go back through and recap each routine so that you can figure out which one you want to start if you feel as if you want to revamp your laundry routine and get a little bit more consistent with your laundry routine, to be able to keep up with things.

Ashley Brown  14:48

So the first one was one load a day. When you wash, dry, fold, and put away one load of laundry each day or most days of the week. So that's the first laundry routine. The second one was the basket routine. So this is when you wash all of your clothes and you put sorted clothes in baskets to pull out when needed. So no folding, no putting away of clothes. And then the last and final routine was the three day laundry routine, which is my personal routine. And this is when you wash and dry all of your clothes on day one, you fold all of your clothes on day two, and you put away all of your clothes on day three. And those are the three laundry routines.

Ashley Brown  15:28

So I can say each of these routines can help to keep your laundry consistently done and will help to alleviate stress caused by  laundry day, especially if you've been having some pressure and stress and annoyance from laundry day. Try out one of these routines. And let me know if it helps, let me know. But that is it for today. Hopefully this was helpful.
