In this episode, we're going to be discussing, essentially becoming comfortable with always having a lot on your plate. That's usually what we think the reason why I titled The episode this is this how we usually think we're like, oh, I have a lot on my plate. And really, I feel like what we're saying is there's always have something to do.
Ashley Brown 1:53
Right? Like we always have something to do. And it's always a next thing. And that over time can become overwhelming, especially if there are always a lot of next things or if there are always a lot of to do's and things for you to do. It can become extremely uncomfortable, and very stressful. But I definitely feel like it's a way for you to become comfortable with always having something that needs to be done that you want to get done. And having things on your plate. Because that's a given in life, we're going to have things to do. But we also have choice, which I'm going to be talking about in a little bit. So stick around with this episode, especially if you feel like you are constantly overwhelmed by the things you need to do in your day and your week in your months in your life. If you're constantly feeling stressed, definitely stick around for this episode, if you are drowning in to dos right now. If you feel like your to do list is just so crowded, is so unmanageable. Stay tuned. And also, stick around if you feel like living life feels unmanageable as well. If your life doesn't feel good to you right now, because there's always a box to check off. Or there's always a word to cross off.
Ashley Brown 3:30
You know, like, I'm not gonna get into that because I can go on a whole tangent about checkboxes scratching things off your list, don't even I'm not even going there today. Maybe another episode. But yeah, becoming comfortable with having a lot on your plate. How can you become comfortable with this? I want to share with you things that I personally do in my life that I feel like could definitely help you. With life comes responsibility is no getting around it. But in order to become comfortable, I feel like there are three things that you can do. And the first one like I was talking about before is understanding that you have choice in life. So is there always going to be something for you to do? possibly more so yep. is always going to be something for you to do or that you want to do.But the thing about it is is that you have the choice and what that is at every single turn with every single decision you make. You have a choice as to what you do. Whether you are a career woman whether you are a working mom, whether you are a stay at home, Mom, it doesn't matter. We all have choice in life. You can make decisions about what you want to do versus what you don't want to do. Because I truly believe that what you choose not to do is just as important, if not more important than what you choose to do in your life.
Ashley Brown 5:14
Sometimes that's where we have to start is what do I not want to do? Because sometimes it's easier for us to decide what we don't want to do, versus what we actually do want for our lives. So making that choice is totally up to you. Now, yes, if you choose not to do certain things, and will there be consequences? Of course, that's even if you choose to do certain things, there's always going to be consequences of your actions, whether those consequences are more so geared towards the positive, or maybe they're not as helpful consequences. But they're still choice in that, whether it's in your favor or not, you do have choice in your life. So remember this when it comes to feeling like you have a lot on your plate, or actually having a lot on your plate, you get to decide what is on your plate. Do you want fried chicken, some baked chicken? Do you want a little bit of Spinach? Do you want you some fries on the side? What is that, that you want on your plate? So that's first thing, that's how you become comfortable. One is understanding that you have choice in your life. The second way you can become comfortable with having a lot on your plate is to ensure that things on your plate are actually of value to you. Okay, are the things that you're doing in your days and your weeks of value to you? Are they helpful to you? Are they important to you? Because if they're not, why are you doing those things? And that's when you have to start digging into what is this about?
Ashley Brown 6:57
Is it because I feel like there's an expectation for me to be doing these things? Do I feel pressure to do these things? Is this quote unquote, a part of the woman's role? That's why I'm doing these things. Right? We have to start digging into the mindset of understanding one are the things on my plate of value to me? And if they're not, what is up with this? And why do I consistently do these things that I don't even give two cents about. So ensure that the things that are on your plate, do mean something to you, that they are helping you to reach a goal that you have for your life that they are bringing in to fruition. The outcomes that you want to see for your life. This is what really helps you become comfortable. It is because you know what you're doing you care about. So you're going to do them. So that's the second thing I wanted to share. The list ties into this as well. Once you know that the things on your plate are of value to you, then it's about learning how to best manage the things on your plate. Because when you feel like you can't manage those things that you need to do or want to do, that's when it starts to get overwhelming. That's when life starts to become stressful, it is because you feel like life is unmanageable. Because you're doing this or you're making certain decisions that aren't in alignment with what's the best outcome for you.
Ashley Brown 8:28
Maybe you struggle with decision making, right. And the thing about best managing the things on your plate, this will be different from person to person, how we all manage things is different. I love planning, I love prioritization. I'm also a really huge compartmentalize or I don't know if that's a word, but I love to compartmentalize. I love to put my days in to like blocks of like what I'm doing. Versus like writing down every little task. My brain works better in compartments. So you have to really start to understand how do you best manage the things on your plate, your unique plate? Is that going to be planning for you? Is that going to be prioritization? For you really focusing on that and prioritizing what needs to be done or what you want to get done? And knowing that everything is not equally weighted. It's not everything is not equally weighted. When you look at things, something's always going to come up to the top more than another thing. And getting really familiar with how to make that decision can be really helpful for you.
Ashley Brown 9:45
Delegation may be the best way to manage things on your plate. Maybe you're not a planner. Maybe you're like planning who? I'm not trying to plan. Maybe this is you. Maybe you're like I'm not really a planner. I never write anything down, I might have a few notes in my phone, I may put things to my schedule, but I'm not a planner. So maybe delegation is huge for you, because you love to tell people what to do. I know some of us just love telling people what to do. Right? So maybe delegation is your cup of tea, and you can direct someone else as to doing this thing. So that you don't have to manage it. So that is not really on your plate, you have handed it off to someone else. And then another way, of course of managing things on your plate, you know what I'm gonna say? routines, of course, like routines can. Just beautiful. I can't speak and never give enough praise to routines. Because this is the way that I manage the things on my plate, because, girl, I got some things on my plate, right? And all of them are of value to me. And because I've made that choice, I've made that decision as to what is of value. And so I use routines to manage the things on my plate, for sure. Because when I can get some actions together, that's leading me towards a certain outcome that I don't have to think about day in day out. I just do it.
Ashley Brown 11:20
It spring me into action, I get the things done. I care for myself, I love me a good self care routine. So that's how do I best manage the things on my plate, you have to decide what is that going to be for you. And it could be a combination of all of these things. You just have to decide what works best for you. So that's really how you become comfortable with always having something on that plate. Because like I said, in life, with us being beings in this thing called life is going to take place like we're going to have things to do. You decide what stays and what goes. Remember that learn what's best to help you manage what's on your plate. And please, above all else, fill your plate with things that matter to you. Don't be around you're doing things because you see somebody else doing them. She not you. You're not her. Right, you like what you like. And that's enough. That is enough, is more than enough, honestly. So as we close this out, I hope it was helpful for you to just hear about that, because we can get really stressed with knowing there's always something coming. And just briefly I'm going to mention this too, because this just popped in my head. Being present can also help you become comfortable with having a lot on your plate. Because when you can be present, you're not thinking about what's next. So it's not stressing you out.
Ashley Brown 13:01
So I just added that little bonus in there for you as well. All right, as we close out, here's some routine wisdom that I want to share with you. And that is create routines that make your plate lighter and easier to carry. Create routines that makes your plate lighter and easier to carry. Routines will help you take your plate from looking like you're in the buffet to looking like you had a tapas bar. Oh my gosh, that just came right off the top of my head. I'm so proud of myself.
