Ashley Brown 1:05
Hey, girl. Hey, welcome back for another episode of the routine things podcast. I'm your girl Ashley. And today we are talking about a mindset shifts that you can make if you're rebellious to routines. Okay, my routine rebels listening today, I'm pretty sure which I really hate to call you that because honestly, I don't even know if you're rebellious to routine specifically, I really feel like it's just you're wanting to do what you want to do. And so anyway, if you identify as routine rebel, it's all love here. No love lost, I think that you are definitely in the right place, especially with today's episode. So when it comes to being a routine rebel and what causes this, when I was thinking about this three things came to my mind, I feel like it's certain things that cause us to rebel, and specifically with routines. And so let's talk about that briefly. And then I'm gonna get into the three mindset shifts that you can make, if you're wanting to ease that rebellious spirit, put that rebellious spirit to rest when it comes to your routines.
Ashley Brown 2:21
So what causes routine rebellion, it probably has a lot more factors than what I am sharing today. But I'm going to share three things that I believe causes rebellion to routine. The first thing is, you need to feel a sense of control. I feel like when it comes to routines, you don't probably in your life like to be told what to do. And having a routine makes you feel like you're being told what to do. Like even even if you create it is still is like that, oh, like I have to do it this way. When you're like, Well, what if I don't want to do it that way today? What if I don't want to do it this way. But the routine says I need to do boom, boom, and boom, right? That can cause you to feel like I don't know about this, right? That sense of control is really important. And you may feel like you're being held hostage by your routine instead of driving the ship.
Ashley Brown 3:17
And so this can be something that causes routine rebellion, because you do feel as if you're being held hostage by your routine, or you feel as if your routine is telling you what to do when you don't like to be told what to do, which none of us really I feel like like to be told what to do in a certain sense. But this could be really important for you to be able to decide when you do things, how you do things, so on and so forth. So that's the first thing that could be causing you to rebel against routines. The second thing is that for some is too much structure like too much structure is scary because you fear you will be doing the same thing all the time. And it may get boring. This is a huge one because I feel like for many people who don't really lean into routines, even though they know they can be helpful is because of this wait, I'm going to be doing the same thing all the time. This is going to be boring like this is going to get boring really quickly.
Ashley Brown 4:13
And then what do I do, right? So this could be something that's causing you to be rebellious towards routines. And so think about that. And then the last thing that could be causing you to rebel against routines is you don't identify as a person who would typically have routine. This one is huge too because in the world right in society, we even though we don't like to be judgmental like society in the world has really liked depicted certain people it's like type A and type B and here are the rule followers and here are the rebels and I feel as if you identify as like a rebel or type B or anything of that or like more free flow. You may be like routines aren't really me. Like, I don't feel like I fit into that category of a person that has routines and work towards having routines. And this could be causing you to rebel against routine. I know that for certain people, they like to interchange routines with like flow or rhythm. And I feel like these are the people who feel like, wait, I'm not a typical routine person.
Ashley Brown 5:22
So I'm just going to change the name to flow and rhythm, even though they're all the same thing, right. So if you don't identify as a routine person, then this could be causing you to rebel because you don't see yourself as that type of person. So those are just some things for you to think about sit with. And now we can head into what are the three mindset shifts that you can make to lean more into routine and to rebel less. So the first mindset shift is, instead of thinking, I don't want to be told what to do, you can think I control what I do and when I do it, and this mindset shift is really helpful. Because I want for you to understand that you are in charge of your routine, you get to choose when you do it, when you don't do it, what's included, what's not included, you can choose to change it up if you feel you have total control over your routine. So I don't want you thinking that you don't have a sense of control over routine, like if you build it and you start it, you feel like well, I have to keep it this way, because I started it that way, if it's not working for you, or if you feel like you need a little change, you have the ability to do that.
Ashley Brown 6:28
So that's the first mindset shift going from, I don't want to be told what to do to thinking I control what I do in my routine. And when I do it, that can be really helpful. The second mindset shift is, instead of thinking too much structure is boring, you can think having structure helps me have more fun, because that's really the case, like when you have a little bit more structure doesn't mean you have to have like this super structured life or super structured routine, because I always share about how routines can be flexible, and how I think it's really important for certain people, or even certain seasons of life or your routines to be flexible. But having some structure does help you have more fun, because in those times where you do have a bit more structure, you're getting through things a little bit quicker, a little bit easier. And that allows you to open up space for more fun in your life. It gives you more time for fun in your life. And so instead of thinking that too much structure is boring.
Ashley Brown 7:27
No, having structure helps me have more fun. And on top of that you can make your routines fun. If you know that you like to have fun you like for things to be lighthearted, you're that type of person, you can make your routines that way. A routine does not need to be super rigid, it does not need to be boring, it shouldn't be boring, like it really should in some way entice you, it should be fun for you, it can be light hearted, whatever you feel that you need from your routine it can be and you can make it that way. And so that's the second mindset shift for you to think about is instead of too much structure is boring, think having structure helps me have more fun. The third one, this is the last and final mindset shift that's important. And that I think will really be helpful is instead of thinking I'm not a routine person, I think everyone has routines, including me, everyone has routines including you and is so true.
Ashley Brown 8:24
Right now you have routines that you do, you may not see them as routines, you may not call them routines, but you have them and I want for you to really look for the evidence of where you have certain flows like where you flow in a certain way repeatedly, every single day, where you flow in a certain way every single week, maybe you go to Target every single week. And that's a flow right like you do that maybe you cook in a certain way every single day. That's a certain flow. When you wake up in the morning, maybe you make a cup of coffee every single morning and you sit down to drink it that is a flow. That's a routine. So I want for you to really look for evidence of you having routine so that you can start to break that barrier in your mind that wants you to believe that you don't and you're not a routine person. So instead of thinking I'm not a routine person, I think everyone has routines, including me.
Ashley Brown 9:17
And what can help you lean more into that mindset shift is when you look for evidence that proves otherwise when you look for evidence that you actually have routines. So those are three mindset shifts that you can make. So hopefully this was helpful for you to hear, because I really want for you to lean into routines. Routines can be really helpful in relieving stress, helping you manage your stress, manage your time manage your energy, which brings about more ease for you more flow, more health and happiness in your life. And so even if you still want to identify as routine rebel, that's perfectly fine, but I think that when you start to break away from that identity of being a routine Rebel, and you start to lean in more to understanding like, maybe I'm not rebellious towards routines, maybe it's just, I was thinking about routines in this specific way. And that's why I felt as if they weren't for me, but now I understand that I have them.
Ashley Brown 10:19
And now I can actually truly believe like, everybody has routines. And it doesn't mean that you have to have a certain personality or you have to dress a certain way or look a certain way or do certain things that categorize you, as a routine person. Like everybody has routines. No matter who you are, no matter no matter what you do in life, no matter anything, right? Everyone has routines, because we're all creatures of habit. We are all naturally creatures of habit, we like predictability, that is a part of us in some form, or fashion. And so hopefully, this was helpful for you to hear today. Please take these mindset shifts into account, sit with them, dwell in them and really think about how you can shift your mindset around routines. Thank you for listening to today's episode.
